Clinical neuropsychology is a specialized area of psychology which looks at the relationship between cognition and behavior relating to brain/cerebral function. It covers the entire spectrum of life ranging from developmental concerns in infancy to academic and social functions in adolescents and young adults. It is also useful in assessing cognitive function in the older age range and assessing cognitive function and mental fitness to perform tasks after brain injury.

Neuropsychological assessments may sometimes require 1-2 days and includes numerous exercises that assess cognitive function. In most instances Neuropsychologists form part of the multi-Disciplinary team approach along with Neurologists and Psychiatrists most complex cases.

In some patients with cognitive impairment with significant depression we can utilize the assistance of the Neuropsychologists to assess performance metrics to determine the contribution of behavioral changes in cognition and thus appropriate the correct treatment. We sometimes use it periodically to demonstrate improvements in patients after traumatic brain injury.
