What You Need To Know

A stroke is also known as a cerebrovascular accident. This occurs whenever a blood vessel is blocked by a clot (85% of the time) or when there is bleeding from a blood vessel (15% of the time).

For mobility/balance/gait training and pain control, there is physical therapy. For reintegration of day-to-day functionality there is occupational therapy. Additionally, there is speech, language, and swallow therapy. Sometimes, patients may benefit from an extended stay in hospital to ensure adequate rehabilitation. In these instances, we may involve a Psychiatrist to manage this pathway.

Yes. During the investigation of a stroke, we may detect a cardiac(heart) problem and refer the patient onwards for Cardiological evaluation. In most patients with strokes, they have medical comorbidities such as Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Hypertension, and it’s often important to engage an Internal Medicine Physician/Endocrinologist to manage these conditions to further prevent strokes.
